The softness of the photo reference just caught my eye. I thought this little fat guy was pretty darn cute!

Heron

"Heron"  5" x 7"  Oil on Gesso Board
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/374141

I was drawn to the strong darks and the pink glow of light through the heron's feathers. Is he taking off or landing, hmmm. I think landing as the water looks untouched. Photo reference from PHP, Gary Jones.

Crunch

A bright sunny day after a wet snow the day before. The snow crunching with each footstep. The blue shadows and bright yellows in the snow were striking.

Chautauqua Start

Chautauqua Start  8" x 6"    Oil on Primed Linen Panel

An FB friend and awesome photographer, Jack Sasson, posted a wonderful pic I just couldn't resist. The contrast of color and the design, well I had to paint it. I made very few changes as the pic was perfect!
In 1898, Boulder citizens approved a bond issue to purchase 80 acres of land to be used as a "Chautauqua". Sitting right below the Flatirons, there are many awesome trails to explore.

Cool Corner at Ghost Ranch

Cool Corner at Ghost Ranch  7" x 5" Oil on Gessoboard
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/371970

This is a small corner on a porch of a historic house in Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. It was hot making the porch all that more inviting. The photograph I worked from included the whole porch and part of a garden.  I cropped down eliminating a lot of noise.

I love the turquoise around the window and those reflections were fun. Simplify, simplify, simply! Not simple to do.

This is Katy, photographed by Rachel T on PMP. She reminds me of a pup that I met at the Jefferson County Rescue. A really sweet, sweet girl. Unfortunately the rescues are full of these much maligned breed, Pit Bull aka American Stafford Bulldog.
There are no shipping charges for this painting and sale amount of this painting will be donated to the Pit Bull Rescue.

Officer's Gulch Lake is a small lake just past Frisco, Colorado as you head west on I70. It was early morning, quite cold and the breeze was picking up. Really nice trails surrounding the lake.

Piece of Sunshine

Anyone know what the name of this bird is? I found the pic on PMP, photographer, Robyn Lovelock but I wasn't able to contact them.
I was drawn by the bright yellow, the crisp bright back lighting around the perimeter of the bird and of course that blue bill.

The Shop

The Shop  6" x 8"  Oil on Oil Primed Linen Panel
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/369440

I just really liked the sun hitting this old shed, the ground and the huge tree hanging over it. There's a lot of these structures as you drive on the outskirts of the city.
Tried to work quickly, simple strokes. Pushing the trees back in the distance.  Greens can be really challenging when there is so much.  You have to observe carefully to see the variety of greens, blues, mauves, purples and more that are really there.

Brush Fire

Brush Fire  6" x 8"  Oil on Oil Primed Linen Board
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/368839

This area is very close to where I live.  Every season it catches my eye as I drive by.  I love the design as it takes you back to an opening where the foothills, then the mountains begin.

The colors really are this vibrant and fiery.  I loved painting this painting.  I think I'm going to have to paint a larger version.

Sipapu Cabin

5" x 7"  Oil on Gessoboard
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/368132

There's a great area just east of Sipapu ski area in New Mexico that has several cabins for rent. They're a little run down but very charming. I loved the sun bleached grass against the dark red of the cabin.  The dark evergreen and bright greens of the foliage are so beautiful.
The highlight on the evergreen came out a little funky in this photo. It's a little more green-blue in the painting.

This is one a many areas I love in New Mexico.  Hoping to get down there this fall.  I may have to look this place up and stay a few days.

Elle's View

8" x 6"  Oil on Gessoboard Panel
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/367142

While visiting Fort Worth last January I helped my sister out watching her sweet little granddaughter, Elle. This is a view that Elle can see from her highchair in the late afternoon. I'm sure she doesn't appreciate it nearly as much as I did as she just wants to know what's on the menu.

I on the other hand loved the way the sun struck the tree, whitewashing it. The long shadows creeping up the house.  Those dark teal greens in the shadows of the tree.

View from Torrey

View from Torrey    12" x 16"  Oil on Oil Primed Linen Panel

A great trip to Capitol Reef, Utah this past fall.  I was able to do a number of sketches on location. This spot is right outside of Torrey.  A small little tourist town on the edge of Capitol Reef National Park.

The clouds were moving in and cast huge dark shadows on the hills.  The green where the sun hit appeared even more vivid and electric.  It just drew me in.

Painted in studio.  The pic is showing up on blogger more saturated then actual painting.

Wishing for Spring

Wishing for Spring  6" x 8" Oil on gessoboard
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/366745
I had fun with this one.  The red pushing against the soft grey greens. When I painted this view it was mid-January.  The bush was bare, but I preferred to see it loaded with color.

The Lookout

The Lookout  6" x 8" Oil on gessoboard
http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/366353

Snapped this guy's pic while sitting at the stoplight.  He appeared to be on the "lookout".  Maybe watching a storm brewing.
I really like the reds and oranges against the blue greens in the sky.
